VEGAN VIGNETTES: Happy World Vegan Day!

Happy World Vegan Day!
In a just world, this day wouldn’t need to exist (it’s like saying we need an Anti-Women Abuse Day), but one day we will have justice for our fellow Earthlings.
Our Théâtre Luvière recently co-organized a remarkable street performance titled “Say Yes To Veganism”, a wedding action which captured the attention of hundreds of passers-by, both residents and tourists.

In front of cathedral St. Jean, one of Lyon‘s most famous landmarks, the activists celebrated not one, but two couples‘ commitment to ending their exploitation of animals and the transition from violence to peace towards our fellow Earthlings. At the end of the special vows that evoked the basic moral baseline of “do no harm“ and educated the public on veganism, speciesism and the notion of sentience, the activists said their fateful I Dos to lifelong engagement in the animal liberation movement, followed by other traditional wedding rituals such as cutting of the cake (of course, the cake offered a delicious vegan affair of the senses) and throwing the bouquet in a symbolic passing of the baton of veganism to others.

The event also served to further our efforts in putting the society‘s focus on animals and the necessity of respecting their fundamental rights to life, freedom of exploitation, and right to a safe habitat. In countries like France, which lags behind its other EU counterparts when it comes to animal rights and openness to abandoning barbaric acts of speciesism (see foie gras, corrida, etc), this and similar events serve as important steps towards outreaching the general public and pushing away harmful narratives that perpetuate the false notion of human supremacy.

“What do you support?” exclaimed a sign between two visual landmarks at the action: on one hand, a bloody table held a TV showing images from slaughterhouses, while on the other, videos from animals living a peaceful life at sanctuaries were shown to passers-by. The contrast was obvious, the message clear: we need to evolve from performing barbaric acts towards our fellow Earthlings and start respecting their rights and bodily autonomy.

Oceans of gratitude to all these fantastic activists who co-organized this action with me, developed together and made my idea a reality!

VEGAN VIGNETTES: COMPASSION IS SEXY! LINGERIE ACTION VISUALS & REPORT

„You own your body – let other animals own theirs“ was one of the slogans of our comprehensive animal rights project which culminated in a lingerie action this past Saturday on the main street of Lyon.

Why lingerie? Well, we use our bodies simply as a free tool at our disposal to attract attention to the plight of animals and the necessity of their liberation. And what better way to attract attention that the sight of hot bodies in the middle of winter? Along with my beloved friends and fellow activists, it was a challenge, but also a privilege to be able to do activism in this unique way for the innocent, sentient beings that humanity is putting through hell every day.

We designed this action to be very open and inviting, enticing the public with smiles, good music and a positive atmosphere. The main message was: „Exploiting animals is not only horrible, but it‘s also unnecessary,“ and we framed our whole way of activism towards those millenials and Gen Z-ers who are very open to the idea of going vegan, but who might lack certain information and thus feel they must continue the old ways, either because of protein/nutrition or some other reason. We showed that it‘s easy to switch to a suffering-free lifestyle – and that it‘s even desireable! You can be and you will be strong, sexy and compassionate when you become vegan! And even the older folks were receptive of the message.

An ocean of gratitude to Marie and Natasha, who were queen bees with the organization, providing the necessary pillars of ideas and realization with such motivation and strength that organizing this project was truly a breeze! This action would not have been possible without them.

Another ocean of gratitude to Theo and Jeff, who joined us in underwear to show that men can equally be strong and sexy without munching on corpses! Fun fact: Jeff was one of the first people I approached when I had this idea past June during Vegan Place, and he is always so chill and up for great action that it is a pleasure to have such support. And Theo not only did an amazing shoot but also made sure his presentation at the lingerie action was very festive! This was truly a fantastic group of people who decided to use their voice and their bodies in an unexpected yet very attention-grabbing way for the animals. Amazing work and also – this way we managed to silence those speciesist complaints that the action was „objectifying women“. True feminism is advocating for all females of all species!

Our outreachers were Olympe and Sophia who also braved the cold to talk to people and raise their awareness on what happens behind the closed doors of slaughterhouses, and they distributed plenty of brochures and knowledge. Sophia was also part of the calendar and Olympe is an activist from Montpellier who came especially to support this action. Thank you both!

Speaking of a calendar: You know those sexy calendars that American firefighters do to collect money for good causes? Well, we did the same! Our sexy calendar showcases us, vegan animal rights activists from Lyon, all to collect money for „Le Cercle de P.A.N“ association for the protection of animals and nature. The association does incredible work in saving abandoned animals, their medical treatment and adoption, and raises awareness on animal exploitation and how to achieve an environmentally-friendly way of living. At the action, our lovely activist Valerie really rescued us by taking care of the calendar sale. A big thank you!

Fantastic photos and videos (to come) are all taken by Nathalie, who always supports whatever far-out idea we might have. So great to do activism with you. Merci, Nath! =)

Last but not least, Rose-Marie was also there to support us, just like she does on many other actions. Thank you very much!

Our lingerie action was very successful: we collected about 400 EUR for the animals! You can see the amount of 370 EUR at the big cheque in one of the photos, but actually, we had people approach us even after the action ended, so the final amount was bigger. Awesome!

Oftentimes, when we advocate for the animals on the street, we can only hope that we have awakened a sense of moral obligation and urgency in stopping one‘s support for the animal torture industries (meat, dairy and eggs, but also circuses, laboratories that experiment on animals, seaquariums, etc) in those we talk to. This time, we also did something that resulted in a concrete help for animals, and that is something that is incredible. Therefore, a big gratitude to all the activists who participated in this project. I‘m happy and proud to be an activist alongside you all.

Cherry on top of a vegan cake: we got some great media coverage! Check it out here (in French):

I cannot wait to see what positive things we do next. Let‘s veganize the planet!

WHY FRANCE IS THE WORST EUROPEAN COUNTRY FOR ANIMAL RIGHTS

For non-human animals, all countries are bad. All „humans“ who are not vegan condone and pay for animal abuse in all the gruesome forms it exists. From meat and dairy, eggs, to leather, fur, torture for entertainment, and experimentation on animals – it is all built on a mountain of suffering, mutilation and murder.

The title, therefore, does not mean that other countries on the European continent are a safe haven for the innocent victims of human hate and desire for domination. Far from it. Yet, most other countries take strides towards the evolution of empathy, and towards a ban of the most egregious torture practices, however slow the evolution is. Germany is at the forefront of vegan food and raising awareness on the Animal Holocaust (and Berlin was just voted No. 2 on the Top 10 Vegan Cities list by HappyCow). The UK even more. Switzerland, France‘s neighbor, even had a referendum to ban factory farming! It wasn‘t banned (sadly), but more than 30% of residents voiced their opposition, and I have no doubt they will get there soon. Hell, even Bosnia and Herzegovina (my country of origin) recently witnessed its first ever vegan festival, organized in the capital city by VivaBiH, the national Vegan Association.

So, why exactly is France the worst? Surely there has been some progress here, as well?

The short answer is: no. No, there hasn‘t. Sure, it has some vegan options. Sure, there are associations raising awareness on the plight of non-human animals. But when taking into account the place of France in the grand scheme of Europe, its constant urge to become leaders on this continent in all aspects of life, including the evolution of the human thought („We are the birthplace of modern democracy!“), its representatives and the actual level of evolution are pathetic.

The core of the „French identity“ is founded on the suffering of our fellow Eathlings so much that people here take pride in the cruelty and torture they inflict upon them. Take for example foie gras: while it is illegal in several developed countries in the world, and even King Charles recently banned it from the British Royal Court, naming it “torture in a tin”, here it is celebrated and adored. People mock others who do not enjoy in an effort to portray them as simple peasants of poor palate. Let me remind my readers that this awful „delicacy“ is made by force feeding ducks and geese multiple times a day so that their liver gets sick (hepatic steatosis), after which it is eaten as a whole or ground up. The birds are confined in crates so small they cannot move. The workers shove long metal tubes down their throats, which also causes organ failure, injuries to the birds‘ beaks and throats, pneumonia. Moreover, Animal Equality notes that „the wire cages can cause foot and leg injuries, and the intense confinement is mental misery for these normally curious and sensitive animals.“ Of course, at the end of this unimaginable torture (think the „Gluttony“ murder from the movie Se7en, lasting for weeks), the poor birds are violently slaughtered. All that is foie gras.

The French have made their whole identity on cruelty and torture. The more cruel the practice, the better it is for the „food“ they consume, and the „entertainment“ they watch. Who cares if bullfighting originated in Spain! They gleefully stole the practice of killing innocent animals for barbaric thrills and made it their own. Empathy is considered weak and unaristocratic, and if there‘s one thing the French desperately want to be, it‘s the aristocracy of Europe and the world. Being cruel is being sophisticated. Inventing torturous devices is being more intelligent than others who are „beneath“ them. And after literally decades of waiting for the bill to ban bullfight to arrive at the French Parliament, yesterday it was pulled from the debate. The pro-torture representatives sent over 500 ridiculous amendments to stop the ban, even though the majority of regular French citizens (77%) oppose bullfights. A stolen torture masked as the foundation of tradition and identity is defended yet again. The Dark Ages are alive and well here, and the inquisition of animals is endless.

That, ladies and gentlemen, is France. The worst European country for animal rights bar none, because it forcefully wants to superimpose the notion of nobility and culture unto hateful dominion, unto pain and unto unimaginable suffering. A country of despicable acts, of atrocious parliamentarian games, of identity smeared with blood of the innocents. A shameful land, a disgraceful identity. No culture.

I am ashamed and enraged to be here. But in the word of Banksy, „From this moment, despair ends, and tactics begin.“ With my activism, and along other activists, I will do everything in my power to usher this country into true Renaissance, one founded on empathy and liberation of all victims, regardless of the species. As Aymeric Caron, the representative who proposed the bullfight ban bill, said yesterday: „What’s just happened today, isn’t an end… but it’s just a start.“
